Kananaskis / Highwood Pass Areas
Unfortunately the Alberta Government mid 2021 now wants to charge you $90 annually ($15 for a day pass) to drive down highway 40 where there is basically no services other than one gas station. It also includes the Spray Lakes area, the Bow Valley where there are public lands and the Canmore Nordic Center.

Nice scrambles here include Midnight Peak, Opal Ridge South, Mt. Indefatigable, Wasootch Peak and Rawson Lake Ridge. This area is one of my favorites for a sense of remoteness and the type of scrambles that you like to do more than once. Prairie Mountain is a favorite one to take people on as an introduction to scrambling.
Caution - tick season on the peaks down Kananaskis highway 40 is approximately April to June so learn about them and the precautions you should take. If there are mountain sheep in an area ticks are likely there as well. See the main scramble page for bear and animal cautions.
